When it's cold and blustery, seeing a cardinal brings cheer. Growing up in the Southeast, I loved seeing the bright red of the cardinal after all the leaves had fallen and world seemed brown and grey. It gave me hope that spring (and color) would return once more.

This painting was created on a wooden cradled board coated with crackle paste to create that wonderful texture. Wintery blues and silvers were sponged on. Then the holly branch and cardinal were added using collage. The found paper was hand painted and printed with original stencils, then torn to create a painterly effect.

My homage to an East Coast winter.
