Painted Buntings are the fashion icons of the bird world, but mostly shy about being seen. When my friend in the Texas Hill Country sent me photos of the pair that frequent her backyard, I had to paint them!
Painted Buntings are the fashion icons of the bird world, but mostly shy about being seen. When my friend in the Texas Hill Country sent me photos of the pair that frequent her backyard, I had to paint them! The pair in her yard prefer her 40 year-old St. John's Wort bush which is gloriously large and blooms profusely.
For this painting, I incorporated a map of central Texas and various ephemera such as sheet music, Spanish-language newsprint and other items that made me think of Texas. Each sheet was hand-painted, printed and embellished and the ripped up and glued in place. I gave a presentation on the process of creating this painting to the Southwest Artists' Association in San Diego, CA on October 7, 2020 -- and later created a webpage with that information and a couple videos.
