This trio of cheerful sunflowers is a timeless image. But never more timely for March 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine. Each day the news is filled with the struggles of the Ukrainian people as they resist the invaders and endure bombs and shelling. It's horrific. And as my heart was breaking, I learned that sunflowers are Ukraine's national flower -- and many artists are painting sunflowers as prayers for the Ukrainian people. It seemed the right thing to do. So this painting is my prayer for peace, and for the Ukrainian people. I am also donating 50% of the profit from the sale of each print to the World Central Kitchen, providing food to people living in and fleeing Ukraine.
Someday, when the war is over, people will once again view sunflowers as just cheerful flowers.
