This botanical-inspired painting shows a native California milkweed with Monarch caterpillars and a butterfly. This piece is part of a 7-piece group celebrating the relationship between the endangered Monarch butterfly and its host plant, the milkweed. The background is made from whitewashed newspaper articles chronicling the decline in Western Monarch population counts in recent years. I made a stencil depicting the narrowleaf milkweed and used it in the background and several sheets of the decorated paper. Actual milkweed fluff was twisted into yarn and used as part of the root system. And a real milkweed seed was also collaged in. 20% of the profit from the sale of this print goes to help the Monarch Joint Venture, a 501(c) charity devoted to protecting monarchs and their migration by collaborating with partners to deliver habitat conservation, education, and science across the United States.
