This painting was inspired by a trip to visit the in-laws on Staten Island. Clove Lakes Park is not far from their home, and I had a wonderful time walking around the lake in the summer! We usually go in the winter when it is cold and brown. This scene of a night heron on a willow branch was spotted on one of our walks and really captured the essence of the day for me -- hot, humid, green, and pulsing with life.
The collage includes hand-painted maps of the park and the neighborhood as well as park literature and other ephemera. I collaged the parts out of the water -- the tree, the heron, and the upper part of the snapping turtle, but left the water as paint to heighten the contrast between the two worlds.
